Asssignments for last 3 1/2 weeks of Fal Semester 2013

#1 – Dec 3, we will start a new drawing assignment. You will have until Dec 12 to draw a self portrait – using a photograph and a mirror. Drawings of the facial muscles and skull and then preliminary sketches are required(I have some examples) All drawn at the level of a Drawing I (or 2) student according to the rubric I am including in the STUFF links. Please look at it. Get this done, and you will have a week to make a 4X6 lino and print 10 Christmas cards. This will be some quick printing practice – use holly, lettering, Christmas ornaments, etc. seasonal and small – 4X6(and I have green and red envelopes too) – more on these later.

#2 - Your final exam for this semester will be to write your Artist Statement - I've posted the entire assignment (found a new cool GADGET called pages - it's in the upper right corner above the blog lists - it's called STUFF). I'll also give you a printed copy. I will post websites where you can read other artist's statements and you can read mine also. The Artist Statement can be quite a journey into why we do what we do! It will be due on Dec. 17 at the beginning of class. We will listen to each other pour out our souls in class - not really, but let's be brave and read a few!

#3 - I'm not sure exactly what the exam schedule is, but if it's like last year, 1, 2 and 3 will be Wed. Dec 18.

If your grade, grades and attendance allow you to be exempt from this class, all of your stuff  - the papers, supplies you’ve borrowed, charcoal, pencils, sharpeners, erasers, etc, and your drawer must be cleaned out, stuff trashed, repacked, neatened up or whatever. All of your drawings must go into a large folder with your name on it. Also your drawer key must be checked into the box. You need to have this done before you leave school on Dec.17 (not during this class), in order to be exempt

I'll need to check you off the list because it will be a grade!!

#4 - You also have a homework assignment due Dec 3. I gave you 2 weeks, because I think you need it to do a good job – so it will be the homework grade for Dec 3 &9

#5 -  The rubric (grading sheet) for the cow skull drawings is in STUFF also - you need one for your finished drawings, and there will be another posted for your finished self portrait - these need to be printed out and when you grade yourself, turn it in so I can grade it.

New Drawing Still Life Up on Monday!!

A memento mori (Latin - 'remember that you will die') is an artistic or symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death.

So guess what we will be drawing for the next two weeks??
THE SKELETON!!!
Of course!!
There will be a skeleton based still life on your favorite counter. We are going to double up our tables to get everyone as close as possible. NO ONE will be more than 6' away - we may need a ladder or 2!
The preliminary sketches start first thing Monday in class - 1-2 days, prelim. sketches - posted each day.
NO TALKING!!!

Homework #3 is due at the beginning of class also. Anyone having trouble with the assignments MUST come in and talk to me during my tutorial time - ask your fellow students for help first, they are a great resource for you.
See you Monday!!

DON'T FORGET!!! 2nd 6 weeks' homework assignments are posted on Oct. 6th!

2nd 6 Weeks Homework Assignments!!

Drawing 1/2 Sketchbook Assignments 2nd 6 weeks
Sketchbook #1: Free Draw – 11X14 – use large sketchbook or paper
Due: Oct 15 at beginning of class
Choose any topic/technique that interests you and create a drawing that fills the entire
page.
Assignment will be graded using the following rubric:
20 points – composition is interesting and makes good use of the entire page
20 points – good craftsmanship
10 points – overall effort and evidence of time spent on project

Sketchbook #2, #3, and #4: Developing a Series…3 drawings, 50 points each
Due: Monday Oct 21, Oct 28, and Nov 4 at the beginning of class
I want you to select one of the themes below. You will create a series of three drawings
on the same theme. Each drawing should interpret the selected theme in a different
way, but all will use the same theme.
Please pick one of these themes to work with:
· Help!
· Jackets, blankets, and sheets
· Things found on restaurant napkins
· It’s raining dogs and cats
· Revenge
· Trading forever
· Dirigibles and submersibles
· Capture the flag
· Double it up
· In 5 minutes…
· Adhere to me
· Caffeine and Sugar
· Science project gone wrong

Presentation and Grading: 3 drawings = 150 points
Please make sure that all drawings are in your sketchbook--don’t turn in loose pages.
Put your name and the name of the assignment on the back of the drawing. If they are
in various places in the book, mark the ones that you want me to grade with a stickie note
so that I am sure to find them. Remember, all three drawings should relate to one
theme - you’re developing a series, DON’T do three separate topics.

Each Assignment will be graded using the following rubric:
5 points – creative interpretation of the selected theme for series
15 points – composition is interesting and makes good use of the entire page
20 points – good craftsmanship
10 points – overall effort and evidence of time spent on project

Critique will be Tuesday Nov 5 - Please don't be absent!!
